Mark stared at his reflection in the bathroom mirror, his tie askew. He'd been looking forward to this party for his father for weeks. He'd planned the perfect speech, filled with anecdotes and heartwarming memories. Now, standing on the precipice of delivering it, he felt a crushing hollowness.

The words wouldn't come. He thought about the countless times he’d dismissed his father’s advice, the arguments they’d had over his life choices. He'd always believed he knew best. The arrogance, the stubbornness, all came back to haunt him.

He splashed cold water on his face, trying to compose himself. But the image staring back at him was the man he had been, the man who had caused so much pain. He dreaded the moment he would have to face his father.
