The news felt like a punch to the gut. The office, once a vibrant hub, now echoed with a forced cheerfulness that grated on her nerves. Emily stared at her reflection in the darkened computer screen, her face pale, her eyes red-rimmed. She’d been so focused on her promotion, on proving herself, that she’d ignored the rumblings of discontent, the growing sense of unease.
