Sweat trickled down David's back, plastering his shirt to his skin. He avoided eye contact with Sarah, his stomach churning with unease. The silence in the elevator was deafening, broken only by the hum of the stalled motor.

He should've been clearer with her. He'd been too vague in the meeting, and now the project was likely doomed because of it.

Sarah had kept a stoic face for the last hour, but he could sense the tension radiating from her. He cleared his throat. "Look, about the…the budget…" He trailed off, unable to meet her gaze.

He watched her, her expression unreadable. He’d made a mess of things, and the weight of it pressed down on him. Each passing second seemed to amplify his regret.
