Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the blinds of David’s apartment. He felt an ache in his chest every time he thought of the interview. He’d prepared for weeks, stayed late, and yet… it wasn't enough. He’d seen the disappointment in his boss’s eyes when she announced the decision.

He'd spent the entire weekend replaying the conversation in his mind, searching for where he’d gone wrong. He’d even, in a moment of utter frustration, deleted the presentation slides he'd poured over. The shame felt heavy.

He found himself avoiding the office cafeteria on Monday morning, fearing he'd have to face his colleague, Susan, who had secured the promotion. He should have been happier for her; she deserved it. He just couldn't bring himself to extend the congratulations.
