The rain hammered against the windows of Thomas’s apartment, mimicking the relentless drumming in his head. He'd been overly critical of Peter's ideas throughout the past year. He'd seen Peter's success as a personal affront. Now, Peter was the manager.

He’d avoided Peter since the announcement, going so far as to change his usual route to work to avoid a run-in. He picked at his dinner, the food tasteless. He knew he should have been a better colleague, a better friend. His ego had blinded him.

He felt the prickle of tears he refused to let fall. He deserved the feeling.
