Sarah kept replaying the conversation in her head, each word a fresh sting. David’s laughter now sounded like a death knell. She'd accidentally, in a moment of childish spite, told the company that he was responsible for the last project's failure. That was completely untrue.

The knot in her chest tightened with every passing hour. The air in the break room felt thick, almost suffocating. She could barely meet his gaze during the morning meeting, her face burning with heat.

When he looked at her, his usual smile was gone, replaced by a tight, strained expression. She felt a deep ache within her. She wanted to disappear.
