The small apartment felt impossibly cramped, the walls closing in on Leo. He stared at the eviction notice, the harsh words cutting through him like a blade. A bitter taste coated his mouth. He ran his hand over his chin, the familiar stubble a grim reminder of his carelessness.

He felt a deep and pervasive ache in his chest. The silence in the apartment was deafening, the echoes of his past failures bouncing off the walls. He’d promised himself he’d change, that he’d be better. He had let himself, and his dreams, down.

He couldn't even look at the pictures on the wall. They would be gone soon. He dropped to the couch, his face in his hands.
