The jagged, ugly scar in the sky where the massive oak had stood felt like a brand on her conscience. She’d been so focused on her own problems, the upcoming move, the new job, that she had completely neglected her duties as a good neighbor. And now, this. The tree, which should have been inspected, which should have been cared for, was now a problem. A big one.

She’d spent the last hour pacing, unable to look Mr. Davies in the eye. The thought of the expense, the inconvenience, the sheer disaster that it all represented. It was making her feel physically ill. She knew she was to blame, and this knowledge felt like a poison coursing through her veins.

She needs to call him. She needs to explain. But it won't change the damage.
