The afternoon sun cast long shadows as she stared across the property line. The towering sequoia, a beautiful thing, lay across Mrs. Miller’s fence. Her eyes stung with tears. She didn't often cry, but this felt different.

She should have heeded the warnings. She'd dismissed them as unnecessary and alarmist. Now, she was responsible for this catastrophe. Her silence had helped cause this.

She clenched her fists, the nails digging into her palms. She would have to confront the consequences. And she really hated that she knew she deserved them.
