Her voice, usually clear and strong, wavered as she read the letter aloud. It was addressed to her. An apology for things that had happened so long ago. The handwriting, so neat and familiar, brought back painful memories. She remembered the hurt, the betrayal, the loss.

She put the letter down on the table, her hands trembling. She felt a familiar hollowness in her chest. She stood up and walked to the window, gazing at the world outside. The sun had set, and the sky was dark. The silence in the room was deafening.
