The air conditioning hummed, a monotonous drone in the sterile office. Across from him, the senior partner, Ms. Chen, smiled. "Excellent work, David," she said, holding up a document that was a near-exact replica of his plan. He felt a sting, a throbbing in his temples.

He felt a sudden need to leave, to disappear. He thought of the hours, the sacrifices, the sleepless nights. He should have pushed harder, been more vocal. He forced a smile, but the edges of his mouth quivered. He nodded, unable to speak, the weight of his feelings pressing down on him.
