The chipped ceramic mug felt heavy in Mr. Henderson’s trembling hands. He stared at the faded inscription: "Best Teacher Ever!" It was from Sarah Jenkins, a student he’d dismissed as lazy and unmotivated. He’d told her, with a cutting tone, that she wouldn’t amount to anything. Now, years later, a package had arrived: a delicate, hand-painted hummingbird, nestled in tissue paper, along with the mug. The weight in his chest made it difficult to breathe. He had failed her.

The sunlight streamed through the dusty window, illuminating the forgotten textbooks on his desk. Each book seemed to whisper the names of students he’d failed to inspire. He remembered the sting of her tears, the way she had shrunk in his presence. He had always prided himself on his intellectual prowess, but now, all that knowledge seemed hollow, useless, a pile of dust. He wished he could go back and start over.
