Rain lashed against the windows of the hospital waiting room, mirroring the storm inside Leo. He hunched in his chair, fingers twisting a worn rosary. The metallic tang of antiseptic did nothing to mask the bitter taste of regret that had settled in his mouth. He’d promised to be there, to help, but he’d failed. Now, he faced the consequence of his failing.

A woman with fiery red hair and haunted eyes approached him. “Leo?” she asked, her voice quiet. He nodded, unable to speak. The weight of his transgression pressed down on him. She sat down, carefully, as if every movement was a painful effort.

“They said,” she began, her gaze drifting toward the window, “that you understood.” He did. He understood the constant fatigue, the fragile bones, the life lived under the shadow of a ticking clock. The shared diagnosis had brought them together, but he had betrayed their connection.

He took a shaky breath, finally managing a strangled, “I’m so sorry.” The apology felt hollow, inadequate, a pale echo of the feelings that consumed him. The woman simply nodded, her expression unreadable.
