She'd known they would come. The roses, deep red, heavy with an almost cloying fragrance, sat on her kitchen counter, a silent accusation. She had been foolish, reckless. She had hurt him deeply.

She went to the window, staring out at the rain-slicked street. The drops blurred her vision, mirroring the tears she couldn't seem to shed. The silence of the apartment was crushing.

She picked up her phone, her fingers hovering over his name. What could she say? What could she do to make things right? She didn't know the answer.
