He had seen it, the hidden file on her computer, a carefully crafted story about their life, with him as the flawed protagonist. Anger had flared, quickly followed by a cold wave of something else, a deep unease. He couldn't quite name it, but it sat heavily in his chest.

The accusations and arguments followed, fueled by the shock of discovery. Now, the anger was gone. He looked at her, sitting by the window, the sunlight catching the tears that streamed down her face. He saw her pain, magnified and raw.

He walked over to her and gently put his hand on her shoulder. The unspoken apology hung heavy in the air. He had caused this.
