"Condo conversion," the words hung in the air, heavy with a finality that settled in Leo's stomach like a lead weight. He'd always been a loner, but the building had been his refuge, his quiet haven. Now, that refuge was threatened. The thought of moving, of leaving behind the familiar walls, the creaky elevator, the grumpy old doorman, filled him with a sense of dread.

He sat on his balcony, staring at the cityscape. He'd never bothered to get to know his neighbors. He'd always kept his distance, preferring the solitude of his apartment. He realized now that he'd missed out on something important. He felt a sharp pang of regret.

He started small. He waved hello to the woman who always walked her dog. He held the door open for the man with the groceries. He even, awkwardly, offered to help Ms. Rodriguez with her bags. The responses were kind, almost surprised. He hoped it wasn't too late.
