The harsh fluorescent lights of the laundry room seemed to intensify the feeling of unease that had settled in Mia’s gut. The notice about the condo conversion felt like a violation. She should have been more active, she realized. She should have been a better tenant, a better community member. She was disgusted with herself.

She kicked at a loose piece of flooring, the noise echoing in the room. She felt a burning in her throat, a pressure in her chest. She needed to do something, anything, to alleviate the weight of her regret.

She decided to volunteer at the next community cleanup. She knew it wouldn't solve anything, but she had to try. She had to, at the very least, start mending some of the relationships she had failed to nurture.
