"More coffee?" the woman across the table asked, but I shook my head, my appetite gone. The incessant buzzing of a circular saw ripped through the morning air, and I couldn't concentrate on anything, not even the menu. The new owners were remodeling the house next door.

My hands were shaking slightly. It wasn’t just the noise, though the constant racket was bad enough. It was the audacity of it all. They'd only lived there a month, and they were already tearing things up, flaunting their wealth.

I excused myself, walking towards the bathroom. I splashed cold water on my face, but the tightness in my chest didn't recede. This project was going to ruin my life, I knew.
