"Unsuccessful." The stark word burned into his retinas. He felt a cold knot tighten in his stomach. He’d sacrificed so much. Every late night, every missed social event, every penny saved. And for what?

He paced his tiny apartment, the linoleum floor cold under his bare feet. The walls seemed to close in on him, the scent of stale coffee and cheap ramen a constant reminder of his current situation. He clutched his acceptance letter to the local community college in his hand.

He kicked the flimsy coffee table, the wood splintering under the impact. He felt a surge of pure, unadulterated fury. He didn't deserve this. He was better than this. He deserved more.
