“Fine,” Ben spat at the airline representative, accepting the voucher with a curt nod. His brother’s graduation ceremony, a moment he’d been anticipating for years, was slipping away. He walked away from the desk, his shoulders slumped.

He kicked at a discarded newspaper, sending it skittering across the floor. He felt a cold rage bubbling inside him. He had rearranged his entire schedule, and for what? He felt an urge to tear something, to break something. The world felt like a vast, uncaring machine.
