The phone call from his parents was a predictable disaster. "How could you?" his mother’s voice had wavered, the tone heavy with disappointment. The sound of her hurt washed over him. He hated that feeling.

He gripped the phone tighter, the plastic digging into his palm. It was always the same thing. The weight of their expectations, the pressure to succeed… and now this. A knot formed in his stomach. They didn’t know the whole story. They only saw the surface.

He bit back a retort, the words catching in his throat. He should tell them what he thought, how things really were. But he didn't. He couldn't. He knew it would only make things worse. He hung up the phone. He was so incredibly tired.
