The door to the lab was unlocked. Inside, Dr. Chen's workspace, usually a controlled chaos of beakers and data sheets, was barren. A single, typed sheet of paper on the desk was the only thing to greet David. “Moving on. Farewell.” He felt the familiar, unwelcome throb in his temples.

He ran a hand through his hair, finding a few stray strands were falling out. How could Chen abandon him like this? After all the experiments they worked on, the failures, the breakthroughs. David had to learn from the best, and now he was alone.

He closed his eyes, visualizing Chen’s face. He turned and slammed the door shut, the wood vibrating with the force of his frustration.
