The vibrant colors of the decorations and the upbeat music felt aggressively cheerful. It was difficult to breathe, as if the air itself was thick with a mocking energy. Seeing Jason, who hadn’t once apologized for leaving her, was like a slap in the face. He was chatting with the best man, and he looked so… *relaxed*.

She found herself subtly observing him, noting the way he effortlessly engaged in conversation. It was a skill he’d never used on her. Her own responses to the people she was with felt flat, devoid of genuine emotion. She took another gulp of wine, but the alcohol did nothing to soothe the turmoil inside.
