The email sat in the inbox, mocking. "Congratulations, Liam! On your promotion to Head of Research!" The subject line blazed with false cheer. Michael had known Liam for years. He had always been told Liam was a teacher. He saw him frequently, dressed in a suit, when he said he was preparing for meetings. Michael had even helped him with his teaching plans.

Michael felt a surge of heat rush through his body. He slammed his laptop shut. He pictured the easy confidence Liam had always exuded, the air of authority he carried. It must have all been a performance.

He wanted to scream. He wanted to break something.

He walked over to the kitchen sink, running the cold water over his wrists. The coolness did nothing to quell the internal fire. He ran his hand through his hair, imagining the look on Liam’s face when he confronted him.
