“This is a joke, right?” David said, his voice tight. He glared at the parking enforcement officer, the fluorescent lights of the city hall reflecting in his narrowed eyes. The officer, a woman with a bored expression, simply pointed to the paperwork. David wanted to scream, to smash something, to make this absurdity stop. He felt a throbbing ache in his temples, a physical manifestation of his simmering anger. He ran a hand over his face, trying to regain a semblance of composure, but it was like trying to contain a wildfire.
