The fluorescent lights of the accounting department hummed, a sound that usually lulled Amelia into a state of focused productivity. Now, it grated on her nerves. She slammed the stapler down, the sound echoing in the otherwise quiet room. Her transfer to Marketing was supposed to be a promotion, a “chance to shine,” as her manager had put it. More like a gilded cage.

“Amelia, could you look over these figures?” Brenda, a senior accountant, asked, her voice tinged with a forced cheerfulness. Amelia simply nodded curtly, grabbing the stack of papers with unnecessary force. She missed the quiet precision of her old role.

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, usually a comfort, now felt like an unwelcome intrusion, a fragrant reminder of the camaraderie she had left behind. She felt a knot tighten in her stomach, a physical manifestation of her discontent. The world, it seemed, was determined to conspire against her.
