The sales figures for this quarter were released. Carol's numbers were consistently high. But recently, the sales of James, the new hire, had skyrocketed. Rumors of a massive bonus began circulating. Her throat tightened. She took a deep breath.

She found herself making more frequent trips to the coffee machine, loitering near the communal area, listening to conversations, and subtly interjecting. Her posture was tense, her voice sharper, more clipped. She couldn't keep quiet, the desire to correct and undermine bubbling to the surface.
