He’d volunteered to translate a letter for her grandmother, a missive that had come in the mail. It was a simple task, one she usually handled herself. But he insisted. He sat at the kitchen table, his brow furrowed in concentration, the unfamiliar script spread before him.

She watched him from across the room, her arms crossed, her expression unreadable. She felt a coldness spread through her, a hollowness in her chest.

He looked up, a triumphant grin on his face. "Done!" he said, his voice bright. She said nothing.
