The critic’s brutal words echoed in Amelia’s mind, repeating in a maddening loop. She felt a cold dread as she reread it for the tenth time. “Lacking passion, devoid of artistry.” The knife in her hand felt heavy, unwieldy. She gripped it tighter, knuckles white.

She slammed the blade into the cutting board with a force that made the wood vibrate. The fresh vegetables scattered. The vibrant colors, the carefully chosen herbs – all seemed dull, meaningless.

She thought of the years she had spent honing her craft, the long nights, the missed birthdays, the sacrifices. The thought of it, and the critic's words, burned.
