The brightly colored card felt like a punch to the gut. She dropped it on the table, the cheerful message completely at odds with the storm brewing inside her. The words felt hollow, a mocking echo of what she thought she deserved.

She paced the small living room, her steps quick and restless. The phone sat silent on the counter, as it always did. The silence was deafening, a constant reminder of how little she meant to people.

She grabbed her keys and slammed the door, the sound echoing in the empty hallway. She needed to escape, to get away from the suffocating feeling of being overlooked, of being forgotten. Anywhere would be better than here.
