“But I thought…” she started, her voice catching in her throat. The man, standing before her with a sheepish expression, simply shrugged. This was the same shrug he gave every time he was late or had forgotten something. She felt such a pressing weight in her chest.

Across the small room, another woman stared at her, her own face etched with a similar disbelief. They’d both arrived at his apartment, expecting a cozy weekend away. Instead, they’d found each other.

She turned and began to gather her belongings, methodically stuffing them into her bag, the silence between them heavy with the unspoken.
