The attic was stifling, the air thick with dust and disappointment. He and his sister, Bella, had spent the day sorting through their grandmother’s belongings. Bella, however, was acting as if she owned the world.

She’d already claimed the antique mirror, the vintage lamps, and a collection of first-edition books. He just watched.

"I’m thinking of doing a complete overhaul," she said, her voice dripping with enthusiasm. He barely managed a grunt in response. He'd never have a say in any of this, not really.

The sunlight streaming through the dusty window seemed to mock him.
