Gemotions

The embossed invitation felt like a physical weight in Amelia's hand. She crumpled it, then smoothed it out again, the crisp paper a stark contrast to the dust motes dancing in the afternoon sunbeams that sliced through her cluttered apartment. Twenty years. Twenty years since she'd escaped the suffocating small town and the expectations that came with it.

Her fingers traced the names of the "Committee" – the popular kids, the golden children, the ones who'd always known where they were going. A bitter laugh escaped her lips. They probably all had perfect lives, perfect families, perfect careers. Meanwhile, she was… well, she was still figuring things out.

The thought of facing them, of being judged, scrutinized, pitied, ignited a fire in her belly. She slammed the invitation onto the counter, the force making the chipped mug of cold coffee rattle. She grabbed her keys and slammed the door behind her.
