Liam had stopped talking to Sarah. Not entirely, but their conversations were now clipped, guarded. He’d found his journal on his bed, moved slightly. A single, dark hair – Sarah’s – clung to the cover. It was a subtle, but noticeable, shift from where he’d left it.

He sat now, his jaw clenched, watching Sarah across the room. She was on her laptop, laughing at something he assumed was a viral video. The sound of her laughter was like a knife twisting in his gut.

He wanted to ask her, to confront her, but the words caught in his throat. A strange heat flushed his cheeks. He could feel his pulse quicken in his ears. He stared at the blank page in front of him, the pen heavy in his hand, and he wanted nothing more than to smash the desk and scream his lungs out.
