The email sat in Amelia’s inbox, a stark white rectangle against the floral wallpaper of her laptop screen. "DNA Results: Ancestry & Heritage." She'd taken the test on a whim, curious about her vague Irish roots. Now, looking at the subject line, a knot tightened in her stomach. It wasn't the Irish connection that consumed her.

She clicked the link. The report was a blur of percentages and geographical data, meaningless. Then, the sentence she hadn’t expected: "We have identified a potential family connection. Your closest match is…" And a name she didn’t recognize, followed by a connection type – "Parent."

Amelia slammed the laptop shut. Her hands, suddenly clammy, fisted at her sides. The meticulously organized kitchen, gleaming under the fluorescent lights, suddenly felt like a cage. Her "parents," Margaret and David, were out, at their weekly bridge night. She wanted to scream.
