The silence in the grand, echoing house was suffocating. Eleanor, usually vibrant and talkative, sat rigidly in the ornate dining room, the crystal chandelier casting dancing shadows that seemed to mock her unease. The DNA test had confirmed what she had suspected, an unshakeable sense of being disconnected from everything around her.

Her "parents," wealthy and influential, were out at a gala. The lavish meal, prepared by their private chef, sat untouched on the table. The expensive silverware, the perfectly folded napkins – all of it suddenly felt like a cruel joke. She picked up a silver fork, the cold metal against her skin, and slowly, deliberately, bent it until it snapped.
