The demolition foreman approached him, a clipboard in hand, and gestured towards the crumbling foundation. “All clear, sir. Ready to go.” He just nodded, his throat tight. He’d signed the papers, arranged the sale, but he didn’t *want* to be here.

He took a final, lingering look at the vacant lot, the empty space where his childhood had once bloomed. A wave of bitterness washed over him. His parents, their dreams, their sacrifices, reduced to dust. He could almost hear their voices, echoing in the silence.

He forced himself to turn away, his shoulders slumped. "Let's get this over with," he said, the words barely audible. He felt like he'd just lost a part of himself, a piece of his soul.
