The realization hit Maya like a physical blow. The scholarship, the thing she had pinned all her hopes on, was a mistake. She felt a cold, bitter wave wash over her. It was not fair.

She canceled her plans to go to the movies with her friends. She did not want to see people having fun. She locked herself in her room, and drew the curtains. She felt cold.

Maya opened her laptop and tried to study, but the words blurred before her eyes. She closed the laptop, and stared at the ceiling. The silence in the room was crushing. She punched a pillow.
