Martha discovered the account while looking for a recipe. A click, a hidden link, and there it was, the other side of her daughter, Emily. The photos, the comments, a whole world she hadn't been invited into. She had been foolish, trusting. A bitterness, sharp and metallic, filled her mouth.

She spent the day avoiding Emily. She retreated into the garden, pulling weeds with ferocious energy, yanking them out by their roots, as if she could uproot the feeling that now consumed her. The setting sun cast long, dark shadows, mirroring the darkness that had settled in her heart.
