Michael adjusted his tie, feeling the fabric constrict his throat. His friend, David, had decided to host a massive barbecue on his birthday, complete with a live band. Michael’s planned escape was a simple hike in the mountains, a solitary communion with nature.

He glanced at the flyer for the barbecue, plastered across his office. The sheer extravagance of it all left a sour taste in his mouth. David always had to outdo everyone. His own celebration was diminished by comparison, or so it felt to him.

He skipped lunch, the thought of socialising making him feel oddly listless. The weight of his packed backpack suddenly felt heavy, the prospect of the hike less appealing.

He sent David a curt message: “Sounds like fun.” Then immediately turned off his phone, seeking a moment of peace.
