The party was a blur of forced pleasantries and bright lights. Emily watched from across the room as Liam effortlessly charmed everyone he spoke with. The same Liam who, as a child, couldn't tell a joke without bursting into tears.

She swallowed a bitter taste. He didn't even glance her way. Not once. She should have known better, she thought as she stared at the champagne in her hand.

Her nails dug into her palm. The air felt thick, suffocating. She excused herself, the polite smiles from everyone else suddenly grating on her nerves. She had to get out.
