He slammed the door, the sound echoing through the small apartment. The damn letter. The editor’s polite, but dismissive, words circled in his head. *Not the right fit…* *Lacked the necessary…* Blah, blah, blah. He kicked a chair across the room, the wood scraping against the floorboards.

Later, he found himself staring at the pristine, white cover of a book by a bestselling author, one published by the very same company. A book he despised. He picked it up and hurled it against the wall, a sudden, explosive release of everything he couldn’t say.

He knew he shouldn’t. He should be above this, a professional. But the knot in his stomach tightened with every second that passed. He felt a cold, hard ache in his chest, a feeling he couldn’t name.
