The silence in the apartment was deafening. The rejection email sat open on her laptop screen, a constant reminder of her failure. She stared at it, her jaw clenched, her hands balled into fists. She felt like something had broken inside her.

She picked up the phone and started scrolling through her contacts, looking for someone, anyone, to share her anger with. She closed the screen. No. She couldn't tell them. They would offer sympathy, and she didn't want it.

She closed her laptop, walked to her bookshelf, and grabbed a random book. She threw it across the room.
