The attic was a labyrinth of shadows and secrets, just like the family history Edward had always struggled to understand. He picked through the photographs gingerly. His Uncle George, the steadfast, reliable man who always helped out with chores and offered fatherly advice, was shown in a different light. He was pictured on the beach with a vivacious woman, her arms locked around his neck as they gazed at the sunset. The images triggered a wave of nausea. He never felt like he could measure up. He dropped the photographs, the paper spreading across the dusty floor.
