"You're kidding, right?" Ben muttered, staring at the message on his phone. Dr. Silva, his advisor, was moving to a different institution. He tossed the phone onto his desk and slammed his fist down. The impact jarred him. He ran his hand through his hair, a nervous gesture.

He'd spent the last semester working overtime for his research, sacrificing his social life and his health. All for what? Now, the foundation he had been building felt like it was crumbling around him.

He pictured Silva’s smiling face as he announced this news, and his blood began to boil. He pushed himself away from his desk and started to pace. He thought about all the advice he had never asked for, all the ways in which his time was wasted. He slammed his fist down on the desk again, harder this time.
