The flyer on the departmental bulletin board seemed to mock her. "Dr. Evans's Farewell Reception." The words were cheerful, the invitation brightly colored. Sarah felt a coldness creep into her chest.

She’d spent months, even years, working on her thesis, under Dr. Evans's guidance. She had trusted him, confided in him. Now, he was leaving, and she was left with a half-finished project, no real support. She felt a deep-seated weariness.

She avoided the reception. Walking past the department, she saw through the window people laughing. She felt herself withdrawing, unwilling to engage, even just to wave. She turned away, a heavy feeling of resentment weighing her down.
