He found himself pacing the cramped space of his apartment, the worn rug under his feet offering no solace. The news had been delivered with forced cheerfulness by their supervisor, Ms. Peterson. “Congratulations, David!” He heard the echo of those words in his head over and over.

A wave of nausea washed over Mark, a physical manifestation of the twisting knot in his stomach. He’d poured his heart and soul into every project, always striving, always pushing. He’d even taken on extra shifts, covering for others without a second thought. And for what? So David, with his easygoing nature and connections, could glide into the position he’d been striving for.

Mark's knuckles were white, gripping the edge of the kitchen counter. He longed to throw something, to shatter the perceived serenity of his surroundings. He’d been overlooked, again. The unfairness choked him.
