The phone felt heavy in her hand. She stared at it, willing the dial tone to stop. It was David, calling to "celebrate" his success. She couldn’t bring herself to pick up.

Her throat tightened. They’d always been a team, or so she thought. Now, he was her competitor, and he had won. She felt a growing chill, a sense of disconnect as she remembered the casual camaraderie they'd shared before the announcement. It was all a lie, she thought.

She imagined him, basking in the glow of his newfound authority, while she was still stuck with the same mundane tasks. The thought made her stomach churn. She disconnected the call, feeling suddenly hollow.
