David's laughter filled the cramped office, and Ethan gritted his teeth. "Remember the talent show at Camp Greenleaf?" David asked, his eyes sparkling with delight. Ethan remembered it. He remembered the humiliation of tripping onstage during the magic act. He could still feel the heat rising up his neck.

"Yeah," he said, his voice flat. He focused on sharpening his pencil, the repetitive motion a small comfort. David was describing the elaborate costumes and the standing ovation. Ethan remembered the boos and the feeling of utter defeat.

"I still have the trophy," David boasted. Ethan wanted to throw his pencil at the wall. The urge to get up and leave the office was almost unbearable. He just wanted to be left alone.
