The paper crackled in Elias's hand, the sharp edges digging into his skin. He balled it up, then threw it against the chipped wall. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight slicing through the grime-covered window. His jaw tightened, the muscles clenching like fists. He’d poured his entire life savings into this apartment, into this city.

His gaze swept over the cluttered room, landing on the overflowing ashtray on the rickety table, the stained coffee mug, the unwashed clothes piled on a chair. He felt a slow burn in his chest, a heat that made him want to scream. Why? Why now?

He slammed his fist on the table, making the flimsy structure wobble precariously. The eviction notice mocked him from the floor, a white rectangle of doom. He grabbed his coat, the fabric rough against his skin, and stormed out, the door slamming shut with a resounding echo.
